Student Work Crew
The Farm Crew is the heart and soul of the Student Organic Farm. They are the torch-bearers of the students who came before them, carrying on the student initiative and hard work that started and sustains the farm. Taking ownership and pride in the farm, they work year-round farm growing fresh organic food.
The crew is made up of undergraduate and graduate students from MSU. Through their work experiences here students gain a deeper understanding of organic farming, food, and community. Many crew members are pursuing majors related to organic farming, such as Horticulture. For them, work at the Student Organic Farm provides tangible examples of what they learn in the classroom. Other crew members also come from a wide diversity of academic backgrounds including English, Environmental Studies, Anthropology, Zoology and more.
Crew members gain valuable hands on experience producing organic fruits vegetables, flowers and herbs for our local markets. Typical tasks done by the crew include sowing and caring for salad mix in our passive solar hoophouses, caring for our flock of pasture-raised chickens, and harvesting vegetables for sale to our CSA, Farm Stand or MSU dining halls. In addition to working together closely, farm crew members often gather off the farm for potlucks, in-services or just to hang out.
Positions open up periodically as members of the crew graduate. These positions are often filled from the ranks of our regular and dedicated volunteers. Please check back for related postings.
